Distinct magma evolution processes control the formation of porphyry Cu–Au deposits in thin and thick arcs

چکیده
Porphyry Cu–Au deposits are the major global source of copper, an essential metal for green transition, and a significant gold. They occur both in thick continental thin oceanic arcs at depths between ∼1 ∼6 km above parental magma chambers situated ∼5–15 depth. Although it is believed that precipitation processes these same arcs, not clear why porphyry two environments display different Cu Au endowments Au/Cu ratios. Using mass balance petrological modeling, I argue form by distinct magmatic evolution precursors. In tied to deep crust build-up large volumes magmas, volatiles metals. These magmas H2O-undersaturated need rise shallow level exsolve fluids contrast, little differentiated mantle-derived directly crustal levels where they pathways generation ultimately controlled arc thicknesses environments, even though actual similar. The model discussed here may stimulate development new tools exploration arcs.

Porphyry deposits are copper-rich orebodies formed by precipitation of metal sulphides from hydrothermal fluids released from magmatic intrusions that cooled at depth within the Earth's crust. Finding new porphyry deposits is essential because they are our largest source of copper and they also contain other strategic metals including gold and molybdenum. However, the discovery of giant porphyr...
متن کاملLate Cretaceous Volcanoplutonic Arcs in Northwestern British Columbia: Implications for Porphyry and Epithermal Deposits
Porphyry Cu and epithermal deposits are spatially and temporally related to specific volcanic and plutonic rocks emplaced during the formation of long-lived magmatic arcs formed along convergent plate boundaries (e.g., Sillitoe, 1972; Sutherland Brown, 1976; Titley, 1982; Sawkins, 1990; Bissig et al., 2003). Recognizing the presence, types of deposits, and age of the mineralized volcanoplutonic...
متن کاملMagma evolution and ascent at volcanic arcs: constraining petrogenetic processes through rates and chronologies
Large Ra excesses in a number of mafic arc magmas, and geophysical observations of earthquake hypocenters locations, indicate that mafic melts can get transferred from source to surface within days to ~1 kyr. Decreasing Ra–Th disequilibria with increasing SiO2 in co-magmatic suites of individual arc volcanoes suggest that magma differentiation often occurs on timescales of a few thousand years ...
